March 6th - Namibia
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel this morning, then divide into groups for your preselected activities:
Morning: Desert Tour to the Welwitchias
Accompanied by experts in geology and botany, take four-wheel-drive vehicles into the Namib Desert. Named after Dr. Freidrich Welwitch who discovered it in 1860, the Welwitchia is considered to be one of the oddest plants in existence. The Welwitchia plant grows from a short, thick trunk with two leaves that continuously grow from its base. “The Big Welwitchia” is nearly five feet tall and is over 13 feet in diameter. This tour operates via four-wheel-drive vehicle and will include off-road driving in the hard-pack desert.
Afternoon: Desolate Diamond Coast Flight
Soar high above the untouched coastline and spectacular dunes of the Namib desert on this 90 minute flight. Take off from the Swakopmund airfield and fly over a sea of sand on the way to the coast at Conception Bay. Fly north along the coastline, seeing the wrecks of several large vessels, a 500-foot-high dune that rises from the water’s edge, and a natural saltwater lagoon that is home to an incredible variety of birdlife.
Evening: All Guests
This evening, drive out into the desert to enjoy a festive dinner under the stars while being entertained by local musicians and dancers.
