February 28th - Antananarivo & Isalo National Park, Madagascar
After breakfast at our hotel, we transfer to the airport for our charter flights to Isalo National Park. Flight time is approximately two hours. Upon arrival, we proceed to our lodge and check in. Enjoy lunch at the lodge, and this afternoon you may choose between the following options:
Isalo National Park
Hike through the canyons and oases of the Jurassic-era landscape of Isalo National Park, known as the “Grand Canyon” of Madagascar. You may choose a moderate (1.5 hour) or strenuous (three hour) excursion. Look for several species of lemur, over 80 types of birds, and a variety of mammals and reptiles that call this park home. The longer hike ends at a secret pool, where you may choose to wade or swim.
Bara Village
Drive approximately 30 minutes to visit a village of the semi-nomadic Bara people, the largest of the island’s zebu (cattle) herding clans. Meet the village elders and learn about the importance of the herd in village culture, and enjoy a rice hulling demonstration.
Isalo Rock Lodge Private Reserve
Explore our lodge’s private reserve on this one-mile moderate hike. Walk on a smooth path through the magnificent rock formations of Isalo, learning about the area’s geography with your guides. Descend into a valley containing a small stream and swimming hole, and then climb up to Georgio’s Window viewpoint with stunning vistas overlooking the lodge.
Afternoon at Leisure
Spend your afternoon at leisure at our lodge. Explore the grounds at your own pace, laze by the pool or indulge in a spa treatment. This evening, enjoy an ala carte dinner at the lodge.
