Day 16: Agra, India

Early this morning we set out to visit the Taj Mahal. It was built by Shah Jahan in honor of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The perfect proportions and decorative marble design make this UNESCO World Heritage site one of the most beautiful in the world.

This afternoon, we return to our hotel for lunch. Later we get to choose from the following options:

Option 1 - Agra Fort

Visit the Agra Fort. Emperor Akbar built this fort between 1565 and 1573 of red sandstone and marble. This enormous complex includes an elegant marble hall where Shah Jahan was imprisoned.

Option 2 - Itmad-Ud-Daulah

Visit the Tomb of Itmad-Ud-Daulah, a charming mausoleum often referred to as the “baby Taj,” and Kachhpura Village, a village in Agra inhabited by the Harijan people, otherwise known as the “Untouchables.”

Option 3 - Marble Factory

Visit the marble factory and store, as well as the Kohinoor jewelry shop, owned by five generations of local jewelers.
